Lethem regarded as the gateway and administrative centre of the Rupununi- comes alive from October 14-20, 2018 as the town prepares to welcome visitors as it celebrates its second Town Week. This year’s event is being observed under the theme “Celebrating transformation, diversity and uniqueness in 2018.”
The theme acknowledges the changing atmosphere of Lethem since its declaration as a town in October 2017 and its role in bridging the diversity of the Rupununi, its people and culture in one event. The event seeks to instill a sense of pride for residents of Lethem and Rupununi and evolve into one which attracts ann influx of visitors to the region.
Town Week 2018 will see a diverse programme which brings together the cultural, educational, environmental, sports and entertainment segments into a week of activities. An interfaith religious service will be held ahead of the official Opening Ceremony on October 14 which will be witnessed by several government and regional dignitaries along with the people of the Rupununi. The event will be declared open by H.E. President David Granger.
To support the initiative for Lethem to become a greener town, the Plant-a-Tree campaign will be executed with support from several regional organizations and residents. The aroma and taste of the Rupununi will be tested through the Roast Master and Boily-Boily (boiled beef- a Rupununi favourite) Competition.
The Junior (under 15) and Seniors Football Competition will see the region’s clubs compete for supremacy and bragging rights. The preliminary competition begins on October 14 with the finals scheduled for October 20.
Rupununi got talent and Mr. Lethem Fitness are two other highlights which will be sure to engage the crowds as there is competition to see who will gain bragging rights to say that they are the best.
The Ms. Lethem Pageant on October 19 is the feature event as the search has commenced amongst 6 delegates for the next brand ambassador for the town.
The Regional Agricultural and Commercial Exhibition which is coordination by the Regional Democratic Council will be held on October 19-20 and seeks to showcase the productivity and innovative products of the region. This event will be held at the Lethem Market.
Town Week is geared at engaging visitors to the region giving them a sample of the Rupununi – its food and culture. Visitors will have the opportunity to visit nearby tourist attractions including Kumu and Sky Valley Waterfalls.
The planning for Town Week 2018 is being coordinated by the Lethem Town Week Committee with support from the Lethem Town Council.
