As Guyana’s Oil and Gas industry continues to develop, it can expect to see infrastructure and facilities being put in place to support the growing activities.
On Monday, the country’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced via a notice in the local press that at least four applications have been submitted for approval to construct facilities, including a wharf and oilfield ‘supercenter,’ as well as for permission to operate the supercenter.
The EPA disclosed that among the applications is one on behalf of Tristar Incorporated (Versailles Shorebase) for constructing a wharf at Versailles/Malgre Tout, West Bank Demerara (WBD).
Additionally, JOP Property Holdings Incorporated has applied for the “Construction of Oilfield Super Center, Plot X Land of Canaan, EBD.” In contrast, Baker Hughes Guyana Company Inc has applied for approval for the “Operation of Oilfield Super Center, Plot X Land of Canaan, EBD.”
Meanwhile, following an announcement early this year by businessman Stanley Ming that he would be constructing a US$200 million shore base facility in partnership with the InterOil Group, an application has been made on behalf of ISIKA Shore Base Inc for the “Construction of Quay Wall/ Wharf” for Integrated Oil and Gas Shore Base, Facility and Navigation Channel at Johanna Cornelia, East Bank Essequibo (EBE).
InterOil registered ISIKA back in 2019, announcing that the company would be designing and building the US$200 million facility.
According to the EPA, these projects are exempt from submitting an Environmental Impact Assessment as the Agency has already screened them, and it was determined that they would not impact the environment significantly.
Just two weeks ago, President, Dr. Irfaan Ali, had stated that with the increased marine traffic due to the oil and gas sector and the expected continuous growth, the country would need facilities to meet the projected increase.
Ali had stated that the country would be seeking to secure international experts’ services to work with the Government and the private sector on waterfront development, wharf facility development, and a zoning development for Guyana.
