The journey of passion, creativity, and ambition took root in the form of Charles Jason Paul Chan Medas – a local photographer who has been capturing life’s precious moments through his lens.
From the humble grounds of his upbringing to the vibrant tapestry of his current endeavours, Charles’ life story is one woven with determination and a commitment to artistic expression.
Now on the cusp of turning 30, Charles shared his humble upbringing in Uitvlugt, on the West Coast of Demerara (WCD) and Stewartville. His parents’ hard work and dedication set the tone for the values he holds dear today.
Apart from my very humble beginnings, I had competitive siblings due to various talents. These talents are singing, and fishing, and we attend church every Sunday.
His academic journey spanned institutions such as Stewartville Nursery, Primary and Secondary schools, followed by Leonora Technical and Vocational Training Centre.

While these institutions laid the groundwork, the now 29-year-old acknowledges that most of his skills were self-taught, primarily through online education.
Most of my skills came from online education, as I am constantly learning new skills, even if it’s not pertaining to my current pursuits.
It was in the pursuit of artistic expression and complementing his graphic design skills that Charles ventured into photography. What started as a creative endeavour soon evolved into a platform for personal and artistic growth.
As time progressed, it was clear that photography was the perfect opportunity to grow not only as a photographer but also as a person. It is sometimes emotional when I reflect on how many have expressed how I made their day and how I’ve helped them see themselves in a way that makes them feel worthy of love.
His skill set encompasses a wide array of services, including graphic designing, creative direction on projects, portrait and headshot photography, product photography, and content creation.
This budding creative officially ventured into offering his services in 2010 but focused more on photography in 2018.

He acknowledges the saturation in the photography field but distinguishes himself by introducing unique styles, catering specifically to the Guyanese population.
The industry is only saturated with photographers who haven’t found their niches; therefore, they compete with everyone else. For me, I introduce various styles to the Guyanese population.
When asked about advice for upcoming photographers, Charles emphasises the importance of not just mastering the art but also acquiring the skills to scale a business.
Don’t just learn the artform; learn the skills necessary to scale your business. Photo sessions are a love affair, so be sure to develop your people skills. Don’t quit your regular job until you’re secured in your skillset as a photographer. Always have goals because they give you direction.
Looking ahead, Charles’ aspirations extend beyond personal success. He envisions a thriving creative industry in Guyana that mirrors and celebrates the nation’s rich culture and excellence.
