About Cheese Straws

Cheese Straws originated in England where they are a traditional food, in addition to the Southern United States. They make great appetizers with their cheesy taste and peppery kick. There are two ways they can be made; cut into strips or made with the use of a piping bag. Cheese Straw requires very simple and basic ingredients such as cheese, butter, salt and a  hint of spiciness from peppers. While Cheddar Cheese is typically used, you can also use different types of cheese. Sometimes nuts are added for an extra crunch.

In Guyana, cheese straw is made with its very own local ingredients. Cheese straw is what we would call a very moreish snack – once you start eating it, you want more and more. Sometimes you don’t realize that it’s all done until you end up with crumbs on the plate. It is found at almost all family gatherings and even the children love it.

Making Cheese Straws Guyanese Style

Ingredients:

  • 8 oz cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 margarine
  • 1cup flour
  • 1 tsp Mustard
  • 1 tsp pepper

Optional: salt

Method:

  1. Grate cheese in a bowl.
  2. Mix pepper and mustard into grated cheese and set aside.
  3. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  4. In another bowl, rub butter into the flour.
  5. Then add spicy cheese mixture to the flour.
  6. Mix gently to form a dough.
  7. Put down in a pastry bag and make into strips. The start attachment is can be used to create the wavy texture.
  8. Put the pieces onto a baking sheet and bake for (12) twelve minutes.

Cheese Straws – Cookie Dough Method

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp ground cayenne pepper
  • 1/8  tsp ground paprika

Method 

  1. Add cheese, salt, cayenne pepper, paprika in a bowl and mix together.
  2. In another bowl, mix flour and butter then combine both mixtures.
  3. This should form a dough.
  4. Use a rolling pin and flatten dough.
  5. With the use of a cookie-cutter, cut small strips of dough.
  6. Bake cheese straw at 350 degrees until golden brown.
  7. Allow to cool and enjoy!
