Denzel Southwell, against all odds, has made a remarkable achievement by becoming the first ever Guyanese Auxillary Assistant Driller on an offshore drillship.
Hailing from Sandvoort in Berbice, this 27-year-old had humble beginnings and persevered to where he is today.
NURTURING ROOTS: EDUCATION AND AMBITION
This Berbice native’s academic journey commenced at the Sandvoort Primary and Tutorial Secondary schools. These schools laid the groundwork for his future endeavours.
Fuelled by ambition, he pursued technical education at the New Amsterdam Technical Institute, specialising in Electronics and Electrical Insulation.
Despite starting as a clerk at the New Amsterdam Municipality, Southwell harboured aspirations for a dynamic career that would challenge and inspire him. In fact, his ambition propelled him beyond the confines of his small-town upbringing.
A JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY: FROM ROUSTABOUT TO ASSISTANT DRILLER
In January 2021, Southwell embarked on a life-altering journey when he stepped aboard the Noble Tom Madden drillship.
Starting as a Roustabout, his aptitude and dedication quickly garnered attention, leading to successive promotions within the ranks.
The Operations Management Development Program (OMDP) proved to be a pivotal opportunity for Southwell, thrusting him into the heart of drilling operations and honing his skills from the ground up.
His ascent culminated in January 2024, when he joined the El Dorado Offshore (EDO) team as the first Guyanese Auxillary Assistant Driller.
Being the first Guyanese to be a Driller shows that we as Guyanese can do anything as long as we work hard and be willing to be dedicated.
His achievement not only marks a personal milestone but also sets a precedent for Guyanese talent to excel in the burgeoning oil and gas industry.
TRIUMPH AMIDST CHALLENGES: OVERCOMING ADVERSITY
Furthermore, this 27-year-old’s journey was not without its challenges. However, Southwell’s journey was not without its challenges. Separation from family, particularly his newborn daughter, tested his resolve while adapting to a new field and overcoming language barriers presented additional hurdles.
Yet, guided by his parents’ sage advice – “Your attitude determines your altitude,” this Berbice resident persevered, emerging stronger with each obstacle conquered.
SHAPING A BRIGHTER TOMORROW: EMPOWERING GUYANESE TALENT
Beyond personal triumph, Southwell hopes to inspire Guyanese to pursue a career in the oil and gas sector.
As a fervent advocate for increased local content, he envisions a future where Guyanese talent flourishes, driving the nation’s development forward.
This journey as a driller has been a blessing for my family, and I know it will make a great impact on my fellow Guyanese. The oil is here, the time is now. So that together we all can develop this beautiful country we call home.
