After 28 years of distinguished service in the United States as an attending physician and specialist in emergency medicine, Dr. Philip McPherson has returned to his roots in Guyana.
His mission is clear: to impart his extensive knowledge and skills to the Guyanese people, providing them with the highest quality of healthcare.
A JOURNEY ROOTED IN PASSION AND PERSEVERANCE
This medical doctor’s journey began in the village of El Dorado in Berbice. He initially earned his registered nurse certificate and spent a year teaching before pursuing his dream of becoming a physician in the United States.
His educational journey included a Bachelor of Science at Morgan State University, a Master of Science at the University of Michigan, and doctoral studies at Drexel University.
He eventually completed his medical degree at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York.
DeSouza Reflecting on their time together, a close colleague and friend, Dr. Sylvie, recalled:

A CAREER MARKED BY EXCELLENCE AND COMPASSION
Dr. McPherson’s career in the United States was marked by numerous leadership roles, including Director at Brooklyn Hospital.
He served as a specialist at One Brooklyn Health, contributing significantly to several institutions.
OLMAC MEDICAL HUB GUYANA: A VISION REALISED
Dr. McPherson’s vision of giving back to his homeland culminated in the establishment of Olmac Medical Hub Guyana. This state-of-the-art healthcare facility is located at Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara (WCD).
The facility offers several services, including urgent/primary care, wound and diabetic care, and Pharmacy. Dr. McPherson’s journey back to Guyana was deeply personal.
I come to Guyana since the death of my mom and dad yearly. Sometimes twice yearly, in honour of them. Every time I go to their graveside, I always ask myself, what can I do for Guyana in their honour?
A COMMUNITY EFFORT AND LEGACY OF SERVICE
The establishment of the Olmac Medical Hub was a collaborative effort. Dr. McPherson credits the support of his family, friends, and the community. His wife, he noted, played a crucial role in supporting his vision.
“If that’s what you want to do, I’ll support you,” she told him when he shared his desire to bring dialysis machines to Guyana.
This medical professional acknowledged the invaluable contributions of his board of directors. He noted that their combined efforts have turned a dream into a life-saving reality for many Guyanese.
HONOURING THE PAST AND BUILDING THE FUTURE
The Olmac Medical Hub stands on land passed down through generations of Dr. McPherson’s family.
My father gave this land to his children and grandchildren. My brothers and sisters selflessly passed this land on to me and Olmac Medical Hub.
