FROM NON-PAREIL TO OVERCOMING CHALLENGES
With her roots down at Non-Pareil, on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD), Sarah is the youngest of three siblings.
She relayed that growing up in Non-Pareil “was a simple time” with fewer distractions and more opportunities to explore.
Life was slower and more relaxed, allowing for more time in nature and with family and close friends. It was a time of innocence and discovery. This period was invaluable in helping me to develop an appreciation for nature, the importance of community, and the importance of simplicity. Even today, I still cherish the memories from my childhood in my small village.
While Sarah’s childhood was not all glitter and gold, her determination propelled her forward.
She shared that after completing her primary education, she had to leave school prematurely to support her family. But despite this hurdle, this now 21-year-old has committed herself to make the best of life.
I struggled to get an education and a career, but I was able to succeed. I’m now studying online and working hard to achieve my goals. I’m grateful for the support I received and for the opportunity to pursue my dreams. Despite the challenges, I’m committed to making something of myself. I’m determined to make something of my life.
BUILDING A BUSINESS FROM THE GROUND UP
After having to shoulder the role of sole income earner in her household, Sarah gave birth to Sarah Nail & Hair Aesthetics.
Faced with the choice between a higher-paying job and entrepreneurship, she chose the latter, a decision that has proven wise as her business has flourished.
I started small, with just me. But the business has grown over the past few months. I am now able to afford to hire other employees, and the business is doing well. I am proud of my mother for managing the home while I have been building my business. This has been an important lesson for me in the power of hard work and dedication.

I try to remind myself of the reasons I’m working hard and to remember the end goal. I also try to break tasks down into manageable chunks and reward myself when I complete them.

I would advise you to start by doing some research into the industry that you are interested in. You should also develop a business plan and have a clear focus on your goals. You should make sure to create a solid network of contacts who will be supportive and provide guidance. You should also create a strategy to keep track of your progress and to measure your success. Lastly, you should make many sacrifices for success. Always stay positive and believe in yourself. Find a balance between work and personal life.
As for the future, this 21-year-old’s vision involves expanding her customer base, increasing revenue, and embracing new technologies to stay competitive.

There will be days when it is sunny, and there will also be days when it is cloudy. Keeping your head up and not giving up are the most important things. Everything will be worth it in the end. There will be times when you’ll feel overwhelmed and feel like giving up but remember that even the darkest clouds have a silver lining. Take a deep breath and keep pushing because, eventually, the sun will come out again. Believe in yourself and stay positive.
