About The Orinduik Falls
The Orinduik Falls is located on the Ireng River, a highland river that thunders over steps and terraces of red jasper on the border of Guyana and Brazil before merging with the Takutu River and into Brazil to join the Amazon River. The falls are situated amid the rolling, grass-covered hills of the Pakaraima Mountains. The wide, multi-tiered series of cascades makes it an ideal waterfall for swimming.
Did You Know? The Orinduik Falls is approximately 25 m tall and more than 150 m wide.
Features Of The Orinduik Falls
- Unique Width – The wideness of the Orinduik Falls is a masterpiece to visitors. As a result of its enchanting characteristics, it has been deemed one of the most beautiful locations in Guyana’s hinterland.
- Ireng River – Another interesting feature of the falls is that it lies comfortably upon the Ireng River (or Maú River). The Ireng River is an Amazon tributary that forms part of Guyana’s border with Brazil. It flows through the valleys of the Pakaraima Mountains for most of its length. It is the only major river in Guyana which flows from North to South and it is one of the northernmost tributaries of the Amazon River system.
- Natural Jacuzzis – The waters of the Ireng River thunder’s over the semi-precious jasper rocks over the Orinduik Falls and then into natural jacuzzis below. You and your mate or your family can enjoy these jacuzzis as they give you a soothing massage leaving you relaxed and free.
- Ideal For Swimming – In contrast to Kaieteur Falls, Orinduik is ideally suited for swimming. The wide, multi-tiered series of cascades makes swimming possible, unlike many other waterfalls. You and the family can get your feet and bodies wet by taking a cool dip. This will refresh you from the tropical heat and energize you to keep on exploring.
- Water Color – The Ireng River’s waters are dark, bearing a striking resemblance to that of Rio Negronear Manaus, in the Brazilian state of Amazonas. As such, it is considered to be the most picturesque of Guyana’s many rivers.
- The Rocks – The rocks are incredibly slippery, however with a little concentration it is possible to cross the river under the falls, which are divided in the middle by a dry ‘beach’ of rocks.
- Wildlife – The area is home to such reptile species as the Antilles Leaf-toed Gecko and Rainbow Whiptail; amphibians such as the Sapo Dorado and Leptodactylus bolivianus; birds including the Muscovy Duck, the Black Vulture, the Southern Crested Caracara, the Double-striped Thick-knee and others; mammals include the South American tapir, jaguar and the red-rumped agouti.
Tip: The name of the falls was said to be based on the Amerindian word for a type of native plant called Orin. The Orin was an aquatic plant found in the falls.
