GTI is one of the leading prestigious technical institutes available to the public for enhanced learning and training. “Across the industrialised and developing world, economic growth is increasingly linked to skilled training necessary to raise labour productivity and average labour standards,” said GDF Chief of Staff Brigadier, Mark Phillips, who delivered the feature address to the graduates in the 2017 graduation.The functions of the institute is fulfilled by its motto “ knowledge and skills through training”. This allows the institution to achieve its desired goals and vision for the future.
Brief History
The GTI began operations in May of 1951 in temporary accommodation in the Queen’s College compound. By July of the said year it was removed to its present location. The original purpose of the institution was to provide training in craft skills but by July 1956, Technician level courses were introduced and by September 1961, Diploma level programmes were included, bringing the total number of courses offered to thirty eight. The number of registered students are currently over 5000 compared to 150 students when it first opened its doors. Courses are conducted on Full Time, Day-Release and Evening basis.
The Institute currently manages seven departments in which a student has a wide array of courses to choose the one that best fits his/her intended career. These departments consist of the Building Department, Electrical Department, Mechanical Department, a Business Department, a Science Department, an Information Technology Department and a Land and Surveying Department.
The buildings and classrooms are repaired and service each school year or when the needs arises. Apart from the library, if a student wishes complete studies in a quiet and in a conducive environment then he/she can do so at the on the lawns which has benches and trees to block out the heated sunshine. There is also a games room facility for students to enjoy indoor sporting activities and a tarmac to enjoy outdoor sporting activities of the Institute. Wifi services are offered across the entire compound for students and staff.

- To facilitate extended opportunities for persons to gain knowledge and skills through open access and other means.
- To provide opportunities and experiences that promote the development of self as well as that of the nation.

Guyana Technical Education Examination
This examination is the culmination of all training offered at the Institute. Exam fees are payable after the submission of the examination forms. Successful students are accredited with a Certificate or a Diploma.
Competency Based Education
An educational system that emphasizes the specifications, learning and demonstration of those competencies (knowledge, skills, behaviours) that are of central importance to a given task, activity or career.
Competency Based Education Training (CBET)
CBET is a modern strategy used for the delivery of training internationally. It provides for students/trainees to:
- know what they have to learn in advance;
- Know how they will be assessed;
- Be the focus of the learning experiences;;
- Appreciate that both theoretical knowledge and practical skills are valued;
- Progress at their own pace;
- Recognize learning as an individual experience
- Know how well they are doing at all times.
Student Service
Drawing rooms and several classrooms are available to all students for private study. These rooms are made available as determined by the institute’s administration.The Resource Centre is opened from 8:00 hours to 20:00 hours, Mondays –Fridays. Available texts are in excess of 6000 volumes. There is also a wide variety of journals, periodicals and magazines. Internet and computer access are available. Photocopying and printing services are also offered.
Entry Requirements
Applicants must be at least fifteen (15) years to attend day courses and eighteen (18) years and older to attend Evening or Day- Release courses.
For Craft Courses, applicants must have successfully completed the Secondary Competency Certificate Programme Part 11 (Advance); or have a sound foundation in general education up to the Grade 11.
Work Attachment
Work attachment is an integral part of the Institute’s curricula and as such, all first year full-time students will be required to complete a six week period of work attachment in industry/commerce as a requirement to be awarded a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ).
Student Activities
Students are involved in games and competitive sports on Friday afternoons and Bible Club activities twice weekly.
The Students’ Guild is responsible for the entire affairs of the student body and makes suggestions/recommendations to administration on miscellaneous issues
As at the institute’s 67th convocation, there was an overall pass rate of 77%. Having graduated, trainees are deemed competent after demonstrating their proficiency in the respective units of competency.
