Guyana is justifiably called the land of many waters because of the numerous rivers, lakes, creeks and streams that flow throughout its length and across its breath. In fact, the name Guyana means ‘Land of Many Waters‘ in a native Amerindian language.
Much has been misunderstood about the word ‘lake’, a lake is basically a large area of water surrounded by land. They are not part of the ocean, they are distinct from lagoons and are larger and deeper than ponds. Lakes can be contrasted with rivers or streams, which are usually flowing. Most lakes are fed and drained by rivers and streams. A lake therefore is a large inland body of standing water.

Most Visited Lakes In Guyana
- Blue Water Lake – This Lake is situated in a place known as Wisroc. It takes about 2 ½ hours of travelling by road from Georgetown to Wismar Linden. You will have to take the Soesdyke Highway and travel way down south of Guyana to go over the Linden Bridge. The lake is sandwich between two hills. Once you walk up the hill you will see astonishing forest-trees from afar and you will hear parrots and macaws screaming from some of those trees. The entrance of the lake is small with a small section of rocks for a small picnic, the water is crystal clear and blue (reflection of the sky). The ground of the lake is crystal white sand. Locals go to the lake to swim and so the name “blue lake” was given to them by citizens of Linden who regularly visited the seemingly blue water lakes. These lakes (there are others in East Montgomery, South Arrowcane, Kara Kara, etc.) appeared during the era when bauxite mining was at its peak and have existed since. The name stuck, and it is the only one they are known by, as they are yet to be officially named.
- Hot and Cold Lake – This Lake is located on the Essequibo coast near Suddie; the water is black with very peaceful surroundings. The lake is very quiet during the week; a little busier on the weekends. There are benabs where you can sling hammocks and there is a Snackette which sells a few items, but it is not open all the time. Activities includes: swimming in the lake, having fun on the swing, camping, cook-outs, boating, bird watching, fishing, slinging hammocks in benabs and staying overnight if desired. The name ‘Hot and Cold’ came about when visitors swimming in the water experienced warm water, followed by cold patches all around the swimming area. This is due to an underwater spring close by, spewing cold water into the lake, giving the effect of being hot and cold.
- Capoey Lake – This Lake is located in an Amerindian village near Anna Regina, Region Two. There is a two-mile road that branches off from the Essequibo Public Road close to the village of Taymouth Manor, this road will have to be traversed to reach Capoey Lake, and then a boat is to be taken across the Capoey Lake. There is a nursery and primary school, village office, library, an all-purpose hall, as well as a number of benabs and a playground, all centrally located at the front of the village close to the lakeside. It is one of the three largest lakes on the Essequibo Coast
- Mainstay Lake – This Lake is located in the Pomeroon-Supenaam Region of Guyana, near the Atlantic coast, northwest of the mouth of the Essequibo River. You have to pass the Amerindian reservation named Whyaka to get to Mainstay. Whyaka is a thirteen square-mile Amerindian community where mostly Arawaks live. Arawaks were the first to inhabit the Mainstay area; they called it ‘Quacabuka’ meaning ‘in-between’. Features of the Lake Mainstay Resort includes: self-contained cabins with air conditioning and refrigerators, free Wi-Fi, a restaurant and a lakeside bar. All rooms have private bathrooms, and some boast private balconies with lake views. An American breakfast is served daily and international dishes can be ordered at the restaurant, also drinks can be enjoyed at the lakeside bar. Guests can unwind in the garden. Volleyball, cricket, football, canoeing and fishing can be practiced. Bikes can be rented to explore the surroundings and excursions to Cassava factory and lake can be booked at the tour desk. Lake Mainstay Resort is 12 miles from Capoey Lake and 12 miles from Anna Regina Town. This Lake is one of the largest lake on the Essequibo Coast. See the top 10 reasons to visit Lake Mainstay.
