The Guyana Police Force Steel Orchestra, an enduring symbol of cultural pride and musical mastery, has etched its name in history with its latest triumph at the 2024 Panorama Competition.
Leading this illustrious ensemble to victory is Sergeant Ray Marvin Sparman, the Senior Subordinate Officer. His vision and dedication have steered the orchestra to new heights.
A LEGACY OF HARMONY AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Senior Superintendent Phillips Small founded the Force Steel Orchestra in 1947, envisioning it as more than just a musical group. He aimed to create an innovative community outreach initiative to foster better relationships between the public and law enforcement.
The band aimed to engage and entertain citizens while being able to foster better relationships between the public and law enforcement agencies.
Over the decades, the orchestra has not only achieved its mission but has also become a national symbol of pride.
MUSICAL MILESTONES AND COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTIONS
The orchestra’s journey is marked by numerous achievements, reflecting its unwavering commitment to musical excellence and community service.
Over the years, being able to perform different engagements in the public helped us foster better relationships with the public.
Further, the orchestra’s repertoire spans various genres, showcasing their versatility and high-level musicianship. This adaptability has enabled them to resonate with diverse audiences and connect with people from all walks of life.
Beyond performances, the orchestra has played a pivotal role in youth development.
Initiatives such as collaborations with the Buxton Pride, the Church of the Nazarene Steel Orchestra, and the New Opportunity Corps highlight their dedication to nurturing young talent.
We were able to go out into the community, teach the youths […] So, there were a lot of successes.
TRIUMPH AT THE 2024 PANORAMA COMPETITION
The pinnacle of the orchestra’s recent achievements is its victory at the 2024 Panorama Competition.
This prestigious win adds to its legacy of excellence, having previously secured championships in 2019 and 2020. The process of selecting the competition piece was a collaborative effort.
We try to incorporate members of the band. This year, we chose ‘Is We Own’ by Dave Martin. Being a state band, we decided that we were going to stick with that trend.
CREATING ELECTRIFYING PERFORMANCES
The orchestra is renowned for its electrifying performances, a hallmark of its approach to music.
“You need to ensure that your music resonates with the people,” Sparman emphasised as he echoed the wisdom of his mentor, Professor Leon Edwards.
This philosophy has guided the orchestra in creating spectacular and memorable performances that captivate audiences and leave a lasting impact.
A JOURNEY OF PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL GROWTH
Sparman’s journey in music began in 2012, with a deep dive into academic studies. His dedication and talent earned him scholarships, leading to a certificate in Pan and Music Literacy and a bachelor’s degree in music and Performing Arts.
“The level of knowledge now allows me to function in any capacity musically,” Sparman reflects, expressing gratitude for the opportunities that have shaped his career.
Looking ahead, Sparman aims to further his academic pursuits with a master’s degree in Music and Performing Arts at Northern Illinois University, a goal supported by an Artistic Talent Tuition Waiver.
“I need to be that positive influence in the development,” he asserts, envisioning a future where the Guyana Police Force bands not only excel in performances but also evolve into orchestral ensembles and educational institutions.
A VISION FOR THE FUTURE
Sparman’s vision extends beyond personal achievements. He aspires to elevate the Guyana Police Force bands to new heights, transforming them into comprehensive musical and educational entities.
“There’s so much that can be done,” he says passionately. He highlighted the potential for a music school within the Police Force to train and inspire young musicians.
