There is a common misconception among the general public that people who start their own businesses do it for the money. While profit is essential, some entrepreneurs genuinely want to give back to their community and country as a whole.
One such person is young businessman Reuben Anthony Lewis Jr, who is currently using his business to help persons in need. While his life journey is not filled with “glitters and gold,” he is cementing his name in the business industry.
Reuben was born on the 8th January 2001 at the Davis Memorial Hospital to parents Lerline Esyln Lewis and Reuben Anthony Lewis Senior and grew up in Coldingen Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara (ECD), with his eight (8) siblings.
Reuben recalled that despite hailing from eight (8) siblings, it had its perks like passing one book and study materials to the other. He attended the Enterprise Nursery School and then the Enterprise Primary School after which, he was awarded a spot at the Buxton Secondary School.
“My childhood wasn’t the best, but it wasn’t the worst either. I enjoyed every bit of it up until now,” Reuben recalled.
After completing his secondary education at the age of 16, copping six (6) subjects at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examination, Reuben began working at SPECOM as a work-study student for three (3) months. After three months, he was hired as a full-time Customer Service Technician responsible for installing solar systems.
I was responsible for installing solar systems for solar module work on the roof straight down to the electrical installation of the inverters along with the network infrastructure of the inverters and finally programming them.
While working at SPECOM, Reuben attended night classes for two (2) years pursuing Electrical Installation Levels 1&2 at the Government Technical Institute (GTI) and also obtaining his Electrical Contractor License from Guyana Electrical Inspectorate (GEI).
At the age of 18, – me being the youngest in the examination room amongst the second youngest being 28 was a little tense. Nevertheless, I succeeded in gaining my Contractors license. Currently, I’m working at Synetech as an Electrical Engineer, which is helping me to offset some EECS expenses.
As it is now, he is currently reading for his Diploma in Electrical Engineering and is contemplating on heading over to the University of Guyana to do his Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
Wanting to help others medically, academically, and psycho-socially has led this 20-year-old young man to launch his business on the 4th January 2021 under the name “Empire Electrical Contracting Services (EECS).
According to the young businessman, his sister’s non-profit organization, Hope Basket, has come on board to help him achieve his mission.
“EECS has officially partnered to make this dream a reality. The main story is that I wanted to see my family and friends better in so many ways along with helping society, and I want to create a business that is not afraid to lend a hand to those in need along with being the biggest Electrical Contracting Services to successfully reach every part of Guyana working for clients along giving back to society.”
He added, “Mounting up wealth is something everyone wants to achieve that was also my goal when I was younger, but I came across a scripture verse Matthew 6:19-20 ‘Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. But Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves don’t break in and steal.’ That verse changed my way of thinking all shall pass away so during the process of obtaining wealth give back.”
EECS provides Electrical Consultancy, Certification of Electrical Wiring, Electrical Installation for Domestic, Commercial and Industrial Buildings, Design and Installation of solar system, Networking Cabling Installation, Air Conditioning Unit Installation, and Security Camera Installation.
The young businessman said that some of his challenges include client dependence, time management, hiring employees, marketing strategy, and recognition within the Government system.
Achieving his goal while helping others to do the same and change their lives and build wealth is the mark Reuben aspires to leave in the business industry.
