You will be surprised to learn that most businesses are closed during the Easter celebration. Beginning with Good Friday, local churches hold worship services to celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. Following Easter Services on Sunday morning, community celebrations take center stage and continue until Monday.
Kite flying
The annual Easter kite flying is a tradition in Guyana. Most families purchase their colorful kites from shops or enterprising vendors, but some children prefer to build unique kites to fly on Easter. Families of different races and varied religious sects are engaged in flying kites high above the sky. Everything is done in good fun that makes Easter a memorable holiday for all.
Rupununi Rodeo in Lethem
Good Friday is a good time for travel overland to Lethem for the Rupununi Rodeo. Activities are: bronco busting – catching the greasy pig – horse racing – steer roping – wild cow milking. They are delightful fun package for participants and spectators.
Regatta in Bartica
Bartica is a town on the left bank of the Essequibo River in Guyana. At Bartica, the Regatta features a variety of water sports and competitions including power boat racing, canoe racing, climbing the greasy pole and jet skiing. For tamer activities, attend a beach party, join a street parade and watch a beauty pageant. Activities include: the usual “Street Jam” on Easter Saturday; on Sunday are the thrilling “F1 Power Boat Racing” and scheduled on Sunday is the exciting selection of “Miss Bartica Regatta Pageant”.
