At the age of 42, Kimarashi Garib has built a remarkable career as a Registered Nurse (RN), touching the lives of countless patients and families.
Her journey, inspired by a deep-rooted admiration for her late grandfather, has taken her through various specialties and has recently led her to embark on a new path of volunteering.
EARLY YEARS AND EDUCATION
Nurse Garib’s roots lie in La Grange, on the West Bank Demerara (WBD), where she spent her formative years.
A proud product of Patentia Secondary School, her educational journey continued at the Georgetown School of Nursing. Her three years of dedicated study have culminated in her becoming a Registered Nurse.
Not stopping there, she further honed her skills by obtaining certification in Neonatal Intensive Care. This certification showcased her commitment to lifelong learning.
FAMILY AND INSPIRATION
As the third of eight siblings, Kimarashi’s path in healthcare was paved by the influence of her late grandfather, who dedicated his life to working in a hospital.
My late Grandfather worked at a hospital, and as a child, I saw him take care of almost everything that went wrong with us. He kept us healthy, and we’re almost never in need of hospital visits. I looked up to him in every way. I am now stationed at the very facility he worked at when I was a child, and I am privileged to honour his memory in that way.
A JOURNEY THROUGH SPECIALISED UNITS: NAVIGATING LIFE AND DEATH
During her nine-year tenure at the West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH), this mother of three and the wife of a sailor has rotated through various specialised units, gaining invaluable experience in diverse healthcare settings.
I was attached to the COVID-19 medical team where I got a renewed understanding of how fragile life is and how, as a health care worker, I make a huge impact in the lives of patients navigating through the two mandated events in human existence – life and death. To execute my duties with diligence and compassion is so important to me.
VOLUNTEERING WITH SMOT: A CALL TO SERVE BEYOND THE HOSPITAL WALLS
Driven by her desire to contribute beyond the hospital setting, Nurse Garib sought the opportunity to volunteer.
I’ve always wanted to be a part of volunteering, but I had no idea of how to make that happen. Earlier this year, I learned about SMOT from a colleague and reached out to Mr. Calvin Roberts, who, in my opinion, is such a great coordinator, and he didn’t hesitate to include me in the next assignment.
FUTURE ASPIRATIONS: SPECIALISING IN GERIATRIC NURSING
Looking ahead, Nurse Garib envisions specialising in Geriatric Nursing with a particular emphasis on caring for dying patients.
Her goal is to ensure that individuals can transition with dignity, surrounded by compassionate and specialised care.
This vision aligns with her belief that every human being deserves respect and comfort in their final moments.
