Athalyah Yisrael is the second-to-last child of two girls and two boys. When she was a child, she was never sure what she wanted to become but it allowed her the freedom to become what she needed to, and it is working out quite well this young businesswoman. Her passion for becoming a wealth builder stemmed from her mother not being able to leave a legacy for her children due to the financial situation she was in. Her parents parted ways before she was born but this only served to motivate Athalyah.
Growing up on Robb Street, Georgetown, Athalyah’s mother, Paula Harris, worked beyond measures to ensure that her daughter was given the best education. Athalyah attended the Saint John College, where she was able to secure passes in all of her written Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC). She later moved to St. Stanislaus College and completed her law studies. Even after completing her studies, Athalyah still was not sure what she wanted to become.
“I did not know what I wanted to become even after finishing school, but I was sent to live in London for a little while, and then I came back, and I started University and did my degree in Social Work, and I started working. I worked at Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) for a few years, and it was there that I always had the desire to own my own business.”
The young businesswoman stated that by opening her own business, she wanted to have a legacy for her grandchildren to inherit, and as such, Fun Park Rental was established. Despite the challenges Athalyah faced while growing up, everything seems to have been falling into place as she got older.
On the 8th of April 2017, the businesswoman married Gabriel Yisrael. She described her husband as a very supportive and helpful person who is also a spiritual leader to her, as he would have guided her into being a financially sound person. Notwithstanding the couple having been married but they do not have any children yet. Despite this backdrop, she stated that her husband is “all a woman can ever ask for.”
Fun Park Rentals
Founded in 2014, Fun Park Rentals delivers thrills to children through trampolines, bouncy castles, push cars for rent. They also do face painting and other creative services to expose the current generation to positive, fun activities which provide physical and mental stimulation, beyond the screen of an electronic device. Athalyah saw much success in this business endeavour.
At the time of marriage, her business was booming, and she was spending the money lavishly, but her husband knew that she will be the downfall for the family if she continued to spend the profits from the business.
“With Fun Park Rental, I was making all of this money, and I was spending more than I was making, and of course whenever I spend more than I made and I needed a backup, who do I go to? Therefore, I was digging into our savings whenever I come up with this great bright idea, and then I just send out all of the money, and that is whereby he was telling me, I have lost the basics of managing money, and I was going to be the downfall of the family.”
As such, the frustrated husband decided to teach her a lesson to see if that might help solve the excess spending by his wife.
“Therefore, his attempt to have me learn a lesson is where he would stop paying off for my debt because he had already paid off like about $400,000 and there I was in a short space of time right back at that figure, and in frustration, he said you would have to learn, and I would not be paying off this debt anymore.”
Outliers Zone
Soon after her husband stopped bailing her out of the daily debts that she created, Athalyah was passionate about finding a solution on how to manage her money. She began searching for classes to help teach her how to manage her money but could not find much. As such, with the little resources provided to her through short online programs, she used that as her solution to break the lavish spending and launch Outliers Zone— a financial management training institute.
So far, Outliers Zone has educated 280 households in Guyana to end the usual paycheque-to-paycheque lifestyle and hopes to continue. This is expected to be achieved through a series of workshops aimed at enabling adults, youths, and children to be money-smart. In fact, in 2019 , Outliers Zone was selected as one of the 17 finalists of the Caribbean Innovation Competition (CIC), in the XIV Edition of the Talent and Innovation Competition of the Americas (TIC Americas 2019) among 5,106 registered teams in the current edition of the program.
Outliers Zone was the sole finalist from Guyana and embraced a project centered around “Ending the Paycheck to Paycheck Life: Helping women and girls take control of their financial future.” Mrs. Athalyah Yisrael, Founder of Outliers Zone, pitched the project aimed at accessing funding to enable women to double their income, via online training, so more women and girls can access it to lead better lives. These young entrepreneurs are now encouraging persons to use their skills and businesses to put Guyana on the map to enable the country to be known for innovation and development.
