Suresh Chan has been selling fish for the past twenty five years. He started his business in Canal (West Bank Demerara) with a basket before moving his trade to the Vreed en Hoop area. He now sells fish on the West Coast of Demerara, peddling through the villages from Windsor Forest to as far as Stewartville (covering some 10km on his bicycle).
His fish is always fresh and he knows his customers very well. When he passes my house he yells “Snappaa! Shark! Cuffum! Trout!”, that is if he has those in stock.
Suresh says that likes his job very much and that he has managed to “see his way up in life”. He said most people would ‘drink-out’ their money but he saves his earnings and is able to support his family. He lives at Sea View, Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara.
