The New Thriving Restaurant started in 1993; it was first located on Regent Street but after a few relocations the prime location is now on Main Street in Georgetown. This location is quite convenient since the building is in the heart of the City; it then presents a panoramic view of down-town Georgetown. There is also a New Thriving Restaurant located at Block M, Providence, East Bank Demerara, next to the cricket stadium and upstairs of the Massy Supermarket. A fast food location for the New
Thriving Restaurant was on Robb and Camp Street but this was recently closed.

The People Behind New Thriving
The entrepreneurs of the New Thriving Restaurant are Xiao Guang Zhao and Che Jian Ping. They are Chinese immigrants who came to Guyana 25 years ago and they now claim the status of a Guyanese. New Thriving has a number of skilled chefs who are masters at preparing authentic Chinese dishes.
The current general manager is Mr. Chung, who is always on top of things.
Grand Opening at Providence
Being proud of their Guyanese Status, Xiao Guang Zhao and Che Jian Ping made sure that the grand ceremony embraced all the cultures of Guyana. The owner’s remarks were “the opening of this new restaurant is testimony to our faith and confidence in the economy, and our faith in the government and people of Guyana as well.”
For the opening of the Providence branch, Cui Jianchun who is Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China said, “I wish that New Thriving could do more things to provide quality food to Guyanese, and that we can continue to share in your [Guyanese] story; your thinking and your feelings. And finally, I wish that this new branch could provide a lot of social service and to help to provide a good image for Guyanese, as a country, as a people and as a community.”
Food at the New Thriving Restaurant
The branch on Main Street has a colorful section on the lower flat that displays a variety of cakes, cookies and pastries. You’re allowed to take a plater and a clamp and pick up whatever you want to eat. It is then given to the cashier, it is packed into paper bags and served friendly to the costumers.
Buffet style: You can choose from a variety of dishes and decide how much you want. You can enjoy a combination of Chinese cuisine at the Main Street branch. It is opened from Monday to Friday at 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
They have a variety of food to choose from, on the first floor you can enjoy fine dining or take away fast food. You can choose from soup, appetizers, rice, duck, seafood and desserts. On the second floor, you can enjoy VIP dining as well as the balcony; whichever is more comfortable to dine at. As for the VIP menu, you can enjoy BBQ dishes, hot pot dishes, iron platter/steamed dishes, fried dishes, etc.
Events at the New Thriving Restaurant
VIP facilities are available for special occasions, parties, corporate meeting and other functions. So, feel free to make reservations at this elegant restaurant, you can be confident that their professional and friendly staff will work to make your occasion a success.
The Providence branch provides a pleasing atmosphere for families; it portrays a romantic setting for couples going on dates or even to propose to that special person. The steel band makes it even more satisfying, you can enjoy the soothing songs that are played or make a request for a song to your liking. The waiters and waitresses display excellent costumer service and would even advise you on what to eat if you’re having a hard time figuring it out.
As for the upper flat, it can be used for shows, as it was used in the past for a fashion show. Models showcased beautiful clothes made by designers, there was a buffet and the event was successful due to the organized staff at the New Thriving Restaurant.
Chinese Food and Guyana
The people in Guyana have always enjoyed Chinese food; whether it is for lunch or dinner. After a hard day of work or after a long tiring, hot day in the sun, it is always satisfying to sit back and eat a box of Chinese food. Children love it and so do the adults. It is a delicacy that has been enjoyed from long ago until now. The New Thriving Restaurant has done wonders in preserving a fine delicacy that has been enjoyed by the people of Guyana – in the past, in the present and hopefully years to come in the future.
