Formed in late 2021 by four siblings from Mabaruma, North Nation Inc. is dedicated to increasing the recognition and growth of volleyball across Guyana. The focus is particularly in underdeveloped communities.
This initiative aims to make volleyball more accessible to people of all ages, especially adults who have limited opportunities to engage in the sport.
ADDRESSING THE GAP FOR ADULT PLAYERS
While there are numerous avenues for younger individuals to get involved in volleyball, North Nation Inc. has identified a gap for adults interested in the sport.
Vance Harding, Co-founder of the organisation, emphasised the potential for older players.
It’s not about starting from young; everyone is gifted in their own way. You can be 20 or 30 and still come and be a good volleyball player. It’s all about the mind, the fitness, and the body. I think they can make it.
EXPANDING RECREATIONAL AND COMPETITIVE PLAY
He said the aim is to foster both recreational and competitive play, believing that a broader reach across all ages and genders will enhance the sport’s recognition and overall growth in Guyana. Harding highlights the inclusive vision of the organization.
I don’t want to just keep it to kids because I know there are adults out there who would like to learn the sport. So to build the Volleyball Federation or volleyball in Guyana, I’d like to teach any and everyone – young or old.
LAUNCHING THE VOLLEYBALL ACADEMY
A key initiative for the organisation is the launch of a volleyball academy. Initially focusing on youth players, the academy will gradually expand to include older players, providing training and development opportunities for all age groups.
My focus is making volleyball known in Guyana. When people hear volleyball, they don’t really know players or maybe just two players if so much. So, for me, it’s building the sport. It’s more about letting everyone know that volleyball is played in Guyana.
DEVELOPING HINTERLAND REGIONS
In addition to the central regions, North Nation Inc. is committed to developing volleyball academies in hinterland areas. This effort aims to bring the sport to more remote communities, ensuring that volleyball can be enjoyed and played by a wider audience throughout the country.
UPCOMING TOURNAMENTS
To further boost the sport’s profile, North Nation Inc. plans to host more local tournaments for both male and female teams later this year. The organization recognizes the lack of competitive opportunities for women in volleyball, especially since the onset of the pandemic, and is taking steps to address this issue.
By expanding volleyball opportunities for all age groups and genders, North Nation Inc. is playing a crucial role in elevating the sport’s presence and participation in Guyana.
