Registered Nurse Osiola Gilbert-Chilcott is the Best Graduating Student of the University of Guyana, School of Nursing.
Nurse Gilbert-Chilcott is attached to the West Demerara Regional Hospital and has been an RN for seven years. She comes from a family of nurses- her grandmother, mother, aunt, and two sisters are all nurses.
Owing to this rich legacy, her love and passion for nursing ignited. Osiola describes being compassionate and capable of transforming the lives of people on a daily basis, quite gratifying. Osiola first started UG in 2017 but was unable to continue when she became ill.
“It just goes to show that sometimes when we think we want something now, God is saying ‘not yet!’ God’s time is the right time, and we must trust him,” she said.
Nurse Gilbert-Chilcott confessed that when she restarted UG in 2018, she was unsure of what was ahead of her but was determined that she ‘can do all things through Christ that strengtheneth’ and pressed on.
Gilbert-Chilcott describes working and studying as the most significant challenge during her educational journey at UG. She worked nights strictly at the WDRH and attended classes during the day. It was tiresome but was all in the process of getting to the goal of being a university graduate.
Nurse Gilbert-Chilcott credits her performance to the astute lecturers within the School of Nursing: Mrs. Winifred Razack, Mrs. Afesha Marshall, Ms. Lois Stephanas, Ms. Mallampatti, and Dr. William Adu-krow.
Nurse Gilbert dedicates her Bachelor’s Degree to her supportive husband, Roy Julious Chilcott, and mother, Ms. Avril Culley.
Have a vision and be responsible for all your actions and decisions. Never give up, never step back and never stay down. We all feel, at various times, that because a physical, spiritual, or psychological barrier steps in the way of our educational/employment journey, it’s an indication for us to give up or change life’s course. But we must ignore that nagging voice to stay down and soar to achieve that goal. Your only limit is really you!
