The Ministry of Education (MoE) has revealed that as of Wednesday, some 24,498 Guyanese have registered for the free online courses offered by Ivy League and other reputable universities through Coursera.
Out of the 24,498 people registered, some 161 persons have completed their courses and graduated. The Education Ministry in a press release explained that the courses’ objective is to provide Guyanese the opportunity to improve their skills and competencies to enhance their performance and employability.
Further, the Ministry is hoping that this initiative will help unemployed Guyanese and those who may need to transition to new occupations. The missive further added that the Minister of Education had engaged the Commonwealth of Learning to offer the courses given our country’s prolonged election process.
“Guyanese were not on equal footing with the rest of the Commonwealth and would therefore be disadvantaged,” the missive explained.
Initially, the deadline for registration was 30th September 2020; however, the Ministry noted that due to the tremendous response, the deadline has now been extended to 31st October 2020.
