Creating the likeness of people onto a piece of paper is an art form like no other. The portrait painter needs an eye for details and a set of tools that can help capture an intimate and personal image of a person’s face.
You could use paint, pastels, or almost any other sort of medium to get it done, but if you can produce art that looks like the person you are painting, you may be set for a career as a portrait artist.
A love for this art form and a skill set that helps to work with different mediums helps 18-year-old Shykah Persaud get better prospects in this field. From a very early age, the aspiring lawyer said that she is creative and loves painting, drawing, and etcetera.
Reflecting on her childhood, the young artist noted that it was riddled with potholes. She explained that her parents parted ways when she was at a very tenure age. She grew up in Kitty in Georgetown and Parika on the East Bank of Essequibo with her brother.
It has been tough; nevertheless, we had and continue to have good days and sunny days by the grace of God. Stuff seems to be getting better, and that is all that matters.
In fact, she shared that while growing up, she did not have access to electronic devices. So, instead, she used painting to keep her occupied.
But before going to the canvas, Persaud would draw her inspiration from her emotions, friends, and environment.
I would dream about things and jump up and sketch it out, so I don’t forget. Also, Pinterest is a big help!
While her journey has not been comfortable, she remains of the firm belief that “art chose her.”
I do everything and hope for the best. Because honestly, when it is planned, it is chaotic, especially if it drifts far away from the set plan. I have a plan, but at the same time, I’m going with the flow. This eases so much unnecessary pressure. Why this career? I didn’t choose it. It chose me. I started looking at TV shows, and I love to look at documentaries and whatnot. And it spiked my interest, and I just wanted to know more.
She noted, however, that the support of friends and family contributes to her motivation to get things done.
I love to paint. It makes me feel alive and kicking. I’d rather wake up every morning knowing that I’m doing something I love daily. This way, I would actually have the motivation to get up and get stuff done. My friends and family are supportive of my art. And they make it known that they’re proud of me.
Persaud aspires to become a lawyer, as she noted that she aims to ensure that everyone has access to justice in a balanced manner. So, next time you are thinking of having a beautiful or unique piece done, be sure to contact Shykah.
