About Demerara-Mahaica (Region 4)
Demerara-Mahaica (Region 4) is a region of Guyana, bordering the Atlantic Ocean to the north, the region of Mahaica-Berbice to the east (Region 5), the region of Upper Demerara-Berbice (Region 10) to the south and the region of Essequibo Islands-West Demerara to the west (Region 3). In most cases the borders are rivers, two of which are the Demerara and Mahaica rivers. While most of the region falls within the Low Coastal Plain, a small portion falls in the Hilly Sand and Clay area. The Indigenous mission of St Cuthbert is on the Hilly Sand Clay belt of Region Four. Many resorts are on the banks of creeks along the Soesdyke Linden Highway.

Population Of Demerara-Mahaica (Region 4)
The area is mixed and filled with people of various ethnic backgrounds. They practice different ways of worship to God such as Christianity, Hinduism and Islam. The Government of Guyana has administered three official censuses since the 1980 administrative reforms, in 1980, 1991 and 2002. Even though this administrative region is the smallest, it has the largest population out of all Guyana’s Administrative Regions. Guyana’s administrative and commercial activities are concentrated in this Region, especially in and around Georgetown, the main port. There were many sugar estates, such as Diamond, Enmore and La Bonne Intention, owned and controlled by the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GUYSUCO). Some residents of this region work on coconut estates, and many people have their own kitchen gardens. Cattle are reared in small amounts for beef and dairy purposes. Rice is also produced by private millers. Apart from this, there are many companies such as Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) and Banks DIH Limited that persons work at. Various banks like Republic Bank, Bank of Guyana, Guyana Bank For Trade And Industry (GBTI), etc. also employ many. In addition, there are various nursery, primary and secondary schools as well as colleges that employs teachers and gives students an education.
Places To Visit In Demerara-Mahaica (Region 4)
- Georgetown – Most of the main buildings are centred around the western region of the town. Around the western-central area is Independence Square and Promenade Gardens, the Walter Roth Museum of Anthropology, the National Library, the Bank of Guyana, Company Path Garden, the National Museum of Guyana and State House (built 1852) where the president resides, and St. George’s Anglican Cathedral. There are many churches, mosques and mandirs in Georgetown.
- Airports – The Cheddi Jagan International Airport located on the right bank of the Demerara River in the city of Timehri, 41 kilometres south of Guyana’s capital, Georgetown. And, the Eugene F. Correia International Airport which is located on the Atlantic Ocean coast of Guyana, 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) east of the capital, Georgetown.
- Monuments – You will find monuments such as the 1763 Monument “Cuffy”, African Liberation Monument, The Cenotaph, etc.
- The Umana Yana – This is a complete thatched structure which was built by the Wai-Wai Amerindians.
- Hotels – Visit the Marriott Hotel, Pegasus Hotel, Grand Coastal Hotel, Princess Hotel, Herdmanston Lodge Hotel, all located in Region 4.
- Other Places – Enjoy also the Zoological Park and Botanical Gardens, the Museum, the Lighthouse and the Demerara Habour Bridge. You will also find entertaining the many malls and theaters such as the City Mall, Giftland Mall and Movie Towne. Movie Towne has a really great movie theater and an excellent café called The Hard Rock Café.
