Hitting 9.7 thousand views on Youtube and being able to work with famous Chutney singers – are just some of the high points for Shivanand Singh’s music career.
Singh was born on the 21st of May 1992, at the Woodlands Hospital to Jaugester and Sattie Singh. He grew up in Handsome Tree, Mahaica Creek, with his two siblings.
Reflecting on his childhood, Singh recounted the days when his village had no electricity, water, or asphaltic access roads. He said the main transportation methods were canoes and boats.
Being the son of a farmer, I was exposed to a lot of outdoor activities such as cattle grazing, rice farming, and cash crop cultivation, etc., and as a kid, I found these outdoor activities/lifestyle to be very exhilarating but humbling as well. This continued into my teenage years and early twenties. Attending primary school was the most fun of the two due to the friends made, the backdam picnics, canoeing, and river tours, etc.,; memories were created to last a lifetime.
He attended the Biaboo Primary School and then the Bygeval Secondary School. Singh said that travelling to and from secondary school was done by boat on the Mahaica River and took at least four (4) hours. The 28-year-old said that it continued until the modernisation of the main access road, which was done in 2006.
After completing his secondary education, Singh started his tertiary studies at the University of Guyana, where he achieved a Diploma in Civil Engineering.
He worked for two years with the Ministry of Communities and then went back to the University of Guyana and completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering.
The young singer is presently employed with Nabi Construction Inc. as a Civil and Quality Engineer and Gr Engineering as a Site Engineer.
Singing
Apart from engineering, Singh is an astonishing singer, who have been creating big waves in the music industry. Singh joined the music industry in 2016 when he entered the E-Networks Emerging Voices – a Bollywood singing competition. Singh made it to the semi-final and also did a duet with Savita Singh of Trinidad
During that competition, the outpouring of support from the public was tremendous, and this is how my singing career began. I have also recorded a few songs after the competition with Bunty Singh and some other local singers.
When Singh is not working, he is usually visiting friends and family and even fishing or playing cricket on the beach with neighbours and friends. The 28-year-old credited his success to his parents and siblings.
Shivanand hopes to complete his Master’s Degree and create his own construction company so that he can contribute to the constant development and modernisation of Guyana.
