For many years, the community of Sophia has been overshadowed by violence, drug use, and criminal elements.
However, one resident, Munifa Erskine, is determined to change this negative perception.
SUBURBIA LEARNING CENTRE & SERVICES
At 30 years old, Erskine is the proprietor of Suburbia Learning Centre & Services, where she instils positive values in the young minds she is shaping.
I have a passion and love for teaching. I enjoy sharing knowledge and adding value to others and helping others improve their lives and make a difference in the community.
Born and raised in Sophia, Erskine decided early on that she wanted to contribute to her community’s development in any way she could.
Growing up with six siblings, Erskine’s childhood was markedly different from that of today’s children.
I enjoyed every bit of my childhood. Growing up without technology and little TV time forces you to be creative. I remember making toys out of match and Colgate boxes and riding a bicycle without a tire and tube—playing with marbles and rubber bands—telling stories whenever there was a full moon or blackout.
During her August holidays, she would often visit Region Two, Pomeroon-Supenaam, which she describes as an adventure. “Life was much simpler then,” she admits.
COMPUTER SCIENCE AND UNIVERSITY OF GUYANA
Erskine attended Central High School before heading to the University of Guyana, where she pursued a career in Computer Science.
Her love for teaching became evident soon after graduation. In 2014, this Sophia resident founded Suburbia Learning Centre & Services, fulfilling her dream of giving back to her community.
I started teaching a few months after finishing my final year at UG, and after about three months, I realised that it was something I found great joy in doing. I taught for about three years in the private sector before working professionally in IT. I then started a computer literacy course that encompasses both my IT and teaching skills.
The Suburbia Learning Centre offers courses in Basic Computer Skills/Literacy, Phonics, Reading, Numeracy, Maths, and English.
Erskine foresees significant growth in her business, especially as technology advances and computer literacy becomes increasingly necessary.
In addition to running her business, Munifa works as a system analyst and is also a budding event planner.
I would encourage others to be in this industry and to become entrepreneurs. I believe if you have a passion or dream, then that should be acted upon.
WORKING DILIGENTLY TO CHANGE THE PERCEPTION OF SOPHIA
Erskine is one of many residents working diligently to change the environment and perception of Sophia. Her dedication to education and community development makes her a remarkable example of positive change in Sophia.
By focusing on education and entrepreneurship, Munifa is not only transforming lives but also contributing to the betterment of her community.
