In a world increasingly shaped by environmental challenges, individuals who dedicate their lives to the pursuit of excellence in environmental health emerge as beacons of hope and catalysts for positive change.
One such individual is Tyriee October, the Best Graduating Student at the University of Guyana in the Bachelor of Science (Environmental Health) programme.
UNVEILING THE PASSION: A TURNING POINT WITH CAPE
As a dynamic force, October’s odyssey into the realm of Environmental Health began with a pivotal moment—the completion of the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE).
During this educational milestone, Tyriee uncovered a profound passion for understanding the intricate connection between the environment and public health.
I discovered my passion for the environment and its interrelation with the health of society. The complex web of challenges that modern society faces from environmental challenges, such as climate change’s impacts on public health concerns, served as the catalyst for my fascination with this field. It was during this time that I realised the immense potential for making a difference in the lives of my fellow Guyanese citizens by addressing the pressing issues that we face.
GUYANA’S TRANSFORMATION: AN UNPARALLELED OPPORTUNITY
Motivated by Guyana’s rapid development and fuelled by the discovery of oil and gas resources, this 25-year-old took his academic pursuits to the next level.
Opting to specialise in Environmental Health at the University of Guyana, he found himself on the front lines of a dynamic and ever-evolving field that addressed both environmental concerns and the health of the populace.
Moreover, in this rapidly changing landscape, the former Queen’s College student saw not just challenges but opportunities to learn, grow, and effect real change.
Throughout my academic journey, I’ve been committed to pushing the boundaries of knowledge. As a testament to this dedication, I have sought out ISO 45001 certification, which focuses on occupational health and safety management systems. This certification, highly regarded globally, reinforced my commitment to ensuring the well-being of workers and the environment in a field where safety and health are paramount.
REAL-WORLD APPLICATIONS
As an intern within the Occupational Health Safety and Environmental Department at GTT, this 25-year-old seamlessly transitioned theory into practice.
[Here], I actively engage in real-world applications of the principles I’ve learned. In addition to my internship, I am also on a dedicated path to obtain my NEBOSH certification, further enhancing my skills in occupational health and safety. This pursuit represents yet another significant milestone in my ongoing journey toward becoming a knowledgeable and responsible Environmental Health and Safety professional.
Reacting to the title of the 2023 best-graduating student in the Bachelor of Environmental Health programme, this Environmental Health and Safety professional said:
My path through education thus far has been a remarkable one, marked by challenges, failures, growth, and unwavering determination. My graduation is not just the culmination of my academic pursuits but a testament to the power of perseverance and the pursuit of excellence.
